Poll: Spam Prevention

So, I've been getting a lot of spam in the comments section lately. I have a couple of options--turn off comments (which I don't want to do), put on captcha (which some people hate), or let the spam happen and just trust you guys not to click on any links in the comments (which can be a little dangerous if someone does click a link unwittingly--although I've added a warning in the comment section--and it's also just annoying to look at).

I figured I'd let you guys decide--so if you care about commenting here, let me know. Here's the options:

Create your free online surveys with SurveyMonkey, the world's leading questionnaire tool.

Which do you prefer? This site and the comments are for you, so I want to do what you want. Please vote, if you care about this sort of thing!

Such a tough call, Beth. I'm one of those that has a very hard time reading the captchas. I don't know if it's my bad eyes or a combo of that and the fact they're typed so poorly to see. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I took away the captcha code and got spammed to death. Once I eliminated anonymous comments, the spam went away. Most legit commenters these days have some way to comment without being anonymous anyway.

Good luck!

I am not alone in saying that captcha really sucks, and I have stopped commenting on blogs that use it.

An alternate proposal is to switch to WordPress, where the Akismet anti-spam software makes this all moot. You don't get spam, and the instance of false-positives for legit comments is like 1 in several thousand.

I hate Captcha and tend not to comment as much if I have to go through it.

I use comment moderation on my blog. All comments go to my dashboard where I can accept or delete them. Doesn't take long to OK them. So is that an option for you? As far as I've found with it, it means that anonymous comments can still be left but you can check the content first.

I don't know what has been up with Anonymous and friends, but it's like they've multiplied like back-alley rats or something. The thing is, sadly, I have a hard time taking any comment from Anonymous seriously so I know I won't want to click anything left by them, even if it turns out to be legit.

@BarmeyBex--I thought of that, but given my travel situation, which often leaves me without internet, I don't really think that's going to be viable for me. :)

Boo, spammers! I think requiring some sort of sign in through some account or other is the way to go. It hardly requires any time to sign in and you don't have to go through obnoxious captchas. I think B.E. Sanderson said it best. Most people have at least one account to sign in these days for comments and whatnot.

There are actually other versions of CAPTCHA available that you can install, so instead of typing unrecognizable letters into a box you have to drag an apple to a pig or do a simple math problem. Here are a couple you could try:
AreYouAHuman
visualCAPTCHA
Dice Captcha
sweet CAPTCHA

Hope this helps!

I chose "Disable Anonymous." I dislike captcha; often I have to try several times until I can get it right. By then my motivation to comment is usually gone...

Sorry you're having trouble. I haven't had any spam problems.
